The piece of technology I'd like to talk about is my laptop computer, which I genuinely believe has transformed the way I live and work.

I first started using a laptop when I entered university about three years ago. Before that, I mostly relied on shared family computers, so having my own device was a completely new experience. I remember feeling overwhelmed by the possibilities at first.

In terms of how I use it daily, I depend on my laptop for almost everything academic — writing essays, doing research, attending online classes, and collaborating with classmates on group projects using shared documents. But it's not just for studying. I also use it for entertainment, creative projects like editing photos and videos, and keeping in touch with friends abroad.

What makes it so important to me is the sheer versatility it offers. It's essentially replaced multiple devices — a notebook, a TV, a camera editing suite — all in one portable machine. I honestly can't imagine getting through a single week of university life without it. It's become as essential as my wallet, if not more so.

How has technology changed the way people communicate compared to the past?

Technology has fundamentally altered human communication in ways that previous generations couldn't have imagined. In the past, communicating with someone overseas required letters that might take weeks to arrive or expensive international phone calls. Nowadays, we can instantly connect with anyone on the planet through messaging apps, video calls, or social media, completely free of charge. However, I think some people would argue that while communication has become more frequent, it has also become somewhat shallower — we send more messages but have fewer meaningful conversations. So the change isn't entirely positive.

I do think there are legitimate concerns about children's reliance on technology. When children use devices for entertainment from an early age, they may miss out on developing crucial skills such as patience, creativity, and face-to-face social interaction. There's also growing evidence linking excessive screen time to sleep disruption and attention difficulties in young people. That said, I think technology itself isn't the villain — it's more about how and how much it's used. When used thoughtfully, technology can enrich children's learning enormously. The key is balance and parental guidance.

What kinds of technology do you think will be most important in the next 20 years?

That's a fascinating question. If I had to predict, I'd say artificial intelligence will probably be the most transformative technology of the coming decades. AI is already beginning to automate tasks in medicine, law, and finance that were previously considered impossible to do without human judgement. Alongside AI, I think renewable energy technology — particularly better battery storage and smarter energy grids — will become critically important as the world attempts to tackle climate change. These two areas, in my view, have the potential to reshape both our economies and our daily lives more profoundly than anything we've seen so far.
