Renewable Energy and the Global Transition

AThe world's energy landscape is undergoing a profound transformation. Driven by concerns over climate change, energy security, and the falling costs of clean technology, nations across the globe are accelerating their shift away from fossil fuels towards renewable energy sources. Solar, wind, hydroelectric, and geothermal power are no longer considered niche alternatives — they are fast becoming the dominant sources of new electricity generation in many countries.

BAmong renewable technologies, solar photovoltaic (PV) power has experienced the most dramatic cost reductions. Between 2010 and 2023, the cost of solar electricity fell by more than 89%, making it the cheapest source of electricity in history in many parts of the world, according to the International Energy Agency (IEA). This price collapse has been driven by improvements in manufacturing efficiency, economies of scale, and fierce competition among panel producers, particularly in China.

CWind energy has also seen significant growth. Offshore wind farms, in particular, have expanded rapidly in Europe and are beginning to emerge in Asia and North America. Unlike solar panels, which generate power only during daylight hours, offshore wind turbines can operate around the clock, making them a more consistent source of electricity. However, their installation and maintenance costs remain considerably higher than those of onshore wind or solar installations.

DDespite this progress, the transition to renewable energy is not without its challenges. One of the most pressing concerns is the issue of energy storage. Renewable sources such as solar and wind are inherently intermittent — they produce electricity only when the sun shines or the wind blows. Without adequate storage infrastructure, such as large-scale battery systems, excess energy generated during peak production periods cannot be effectively captured and used during periods of low generation.

EGovernments play a crucial role in facilitating the energy transition. In many countries, policies such as feed-in tariffs, renewable portfolio standards, and carbon pricing mechanisms have been instrumental in attracting investment into clean energy projects. However, critics argue that such policies can distort energy markets and place an unfair burden on consumers through higher electricity bills. A more balanced approach, they suggest, would be to invest in grid modernisation and energy efficiency improvements alongside renewable deployment.

FThe social dimensions of the energy transition are equally important. While the growth of renewable energy creates jobs — particularly in manufacturing, installation, and maintenance — it also displaces workers in the fossil fuel industry. Regions that are heavily dependent on coal mining or oil extraction face significant economic challenges as demand for these fuels declines. Ensuring a "just transition" — one that supports affected communities and workers — is therefore considered an essential component of any credible energy strategy.
