In 2010, France received by far the most visitors, at 58 million, followed by Spain with 45 million. By 2020, however, both had declined, to 42 and 36 million respectively. In contrast, Thailand and Japan rose sharply: Thailand more than doubled from 16 to 40 million, while Japan saw the most dramatic increase, climbing from just 9 million to 32 million. As a result, by 2020 the gap between the European and Asian destinations had narrowed considerably.

On the one hand, free public transport would bring clear benefits. It would encourage more people to leave their cars at home, thereby reducing traffic congestion and air pollution. It would also help lower-income citizens, for whom the cost of daily travel can be a heavy burden.
On the other hand, supporters of paid travel point out that running a transport network is extremely expensive. If services were free, the cost would fall on taxpayers, and without fare income systems might become overcrowded or poorly maintained.
In my opinion, a balanced approach is best. Rather than making transport completely free, governments should keep fares low and subsidise tickets for students, the elderly and the poor. In conclusion, while the appeal of free transport is understandable, a low, well-managed fare offers the most sustainable solution.
